In a glorious groove, SassyBlack has created her finest project to date. New Black Swing is Black’s step into maturity. Full of spacious synths, heavy bass and sweet R&B vocals, she’s tapped into her soul in a fresh fulfilling fashion.

Smooth, silky, jazzy, funk are some of the terms that come to mind with her approach to this record. Often venturing into extreme vulnerability, Sassy shares intimate sides of herself that have only been playfully touched on in past projects.

You may be familiar with the vocal stylings of SassyBlack as she was half of the dynamic duo THEESatisfaction and also appear on Shabazz Palaces records Black Up & Lese Majesty (released on Sub Pop Records).

This album is all about positive energy & satire as Black effortly recreates the sound of 90’s New Jack Swing while keeping her psychedelic funky sound in tack.

“Vibes. It’s all about the energy I share, the energy we share with one another. Whether in public or in private, in romance or otherwise. I think about the deepest times in my life and how I dealt with them through them music with a bounce, catchy melodies and poetry sentiments.

I’ve always wanted to write & compose a R&B record, but the fear of ultimate vulnerability & judgement haunted me. Would my Queer Black girl feelings be acceptable? With that said, this is a very intent album. Probably the most intentional record I have composed yet.“

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
